The Beauty of Being Predictable

The Beauty of Being Predictable

Call me anal. Predictability allows me to be unpredictable.  I go on a bike ride on the same path. I turn around at the same place. I know where I am going, I have my trusty water bottle.

It is a beautiful ride. I’d stop with my camera and snap away, taking time to wonder and wander. Golden aspen leaves dance in the breeze like sequins.  Flaming maples glow in yellow foliage. All against the azure sky.  I hatch ideas about my website while hearing prairie dogs chirping over their in-ground abodes. On the way back, I pause and ask 2 girls in cowboy hats what they’re looking for in the tall, brown grasses.  “Grasshoppers” one says. Cool.

My "gears" that allow me to meander in a big area.

I am the last person to like routine. I was raised on routine. My mother once said she’d like cook the same thing everyday so she didn’t have to plan meals.

I have a lot of fire in my astrological natal chart. I crave variety and creativity. I need balance. Currently, the new moon is in the sign of Libra, the scale. New moon = good time to begin a project. Libra energy seeks harmony and balance. An impetus to start inner work on that front.

Being a mother has tamed my fire.  A child appreciates structure and predictability. It’s been 14.5 years. I learn routine and rhythm, sometimes begrudgingly. I try to have guidelines, like setting the alarm 40 minutes before school pick-up so I can leave on time for the 25 minute drive. I sing whatever I want out loud in the car.

What routines give you freedom and balance in your day? Do share.

Apt that you should post this on my birthday. As the daughter of your aunt, I can relate to the structured, routine life that was imposed upon you growing up. When I was single, I was driven by balance – keeping routines, but being open to new opportunities, for sports, art, music, whatever. As a mom, I find security in predictability and am sometimes accused of being too scheduled. I do think it’s good for Amie, but I now have to consciously strive to find balance between routine and impromptu activity.

Love that it was your birthday. As a Libra sun its balance-striving energy helped with having grown with strict routine. I have been called a creature of habit by my spouse (what? me?), which can be true on certain things. Amie is still very young (and adorable), she needs routine. I think after age 11 or 12 the Ninja can finally deal with un-routine variation of routine (like # of meals/day on weekends). Thanks for sharing!
